The section of Western Ghats in Karnataka is called Sahyadris, which means ‘evergreen mountains’ in Sanskrit. Three major rivers and some smaller rivers originate from these hills. The evergreen tropical forests here are home to varieties of birds, trees and animals, and some of them are endemic, too.
From Chikmagalur in the south to Dandeli in northwest Karnataka, this region houses a number of wildlife reserves, national parks and sanctuaries. The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, Kudremukh Wildlife Sanctuary, Anshi National Park and Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary are the main ones. Adventure sports like river rafting, trekking, jungle safaris and night camping are commonly undertaken by enthusiasts here. The famous Jog Falls is worth a visit.
