Situated on India’s Konkan Coast, it is India’s ninth-largest ports. It is famous for sun-kissed beaches and beach temples. The city is located at a point where the Gurupur and Netravathi rivers join the Arabian Sea. Cruises come in all varieties. Goa, Mumbai, Lakshadweep and Cochin are the main domestic cruise destinations from Mangalore. Water sports activities, too, have gained a lot of importance currently.

 

The city is also called Mangalapuram. People believe that Mangaladevi, a princess from northern Kerala, came here and she died here. The Mangaladevi Temple, built by the Ballal family, is the main landmark of the city.The airport in Mangalore is only 20km from the city. The main railway station is in the south of the city and there’s a smaller station at Kankanadi. Autorickshaws, buses and taxis, too, are available.

 

 

Ullal, 12km from Mangalore, is famous for its beautiful beaches and beach resorts. You can find saint Syed Mohammed Madani’s Darga here. Someshwar beach, Panambur beach, Tannirbavi beach, Surathkal beach and Karwar beach are some of the famous beaches of Mangalore.

 

St Aloysius College Chapel is located on the lighthouse hill about a kilometre from Nehru Maidan Bus stand. Built in 1899-1900, its walls and ceiling are adorned with the paintings of Italian artist Anthony Moscheni. It is said to be modeled on Rome’s Sistine Chapel.

 

There are many shopping streets and malls for the eager tourist. Mangalore’s Central Market is the place to go for vegetable shopping in the city. You can also find fruits, flowers and household items for sale.
