Kushalnagar Coorg

About five km from Kushalnagar is Bylekuppe, which is said to be the second largest Tibetan settlement outside Tibet, and looks almost like a Tibetan village. There are more than 8,ooo monks and nuns, other Tibetan families and settlers.

Around this place are the Chikklihole Reservoir and the Cauvery Nisargadhama. Kushalnagar is about 40km from Madikeri and 90km from Mysore. The Tibetans who have lived here over the last 45 years have set up Buddhist temples, monasteries, shops and farmlands. The most notable and frequented place of interest is the Golden Temple, with a gold-covered 60-ft Buddha statue and that of Padmasambhava, too.

Among the monasteries, the most famous among them are the Great Gompa of Sera Je, Sera Mey and the Namdroling monastery. The Tashi Lhumpo monastery is the seat of the Panchen Lama. The Mahayana Buddhist University is located at the Sera village. The shops near the temple sells ethnic Tibetan artifacts, clothes, Tibetan herbal medicines and other knick-knacks. At Kushalnagar, you can find budget accommodation and food.
