Nagarhole National Park Karnataka

It is one the most famous parks in India. It gets its name from the two Kannada words in the name which means snake and stream. Well, there still are a lot of streams where you can find snakes. Besides that, there are animals such as the tiger, leopard, elephant, dhole (Indian wild dog), gaur, spotted deer, wild boar, sloth bear, hyena, muntjac (barking deer), mouse deer, four-horned antelope, mongoose, civet and otter. There are more than 250 species of birds here. The park used to be the hunting ground for the Mysore Maharajas.

The forest cover is mainly dry deciduous, along with tropical and moist deciduous. A substantial portion is also covered by bamboo. There are also grassy swamps interspersed with rivers. The Nagarhole Park was established in 1955, and in 1975, surrounding areas of the forest reserve were added to it. The park has been recently renamed Rajiv Gandhi National Park, but the name Nagarhole still stands for a lot of people.

The Cauvery river forms its northern boundary and the Bandipur national park is to its south. A dam on the Cauvery and its reservoir separated the two national parks. This artificial lake provides shelter for the animals and birds in the dry season.

Highways connect the park to Madikere (90 km) in Coorg and Mysore (96 km). The nearest railway station is in Mysore, and the nearest international airport is in Bangalore, about four hours away. There are elephant safaris and bus safaris organised by the government. There are two rest houses operated by the Forest Department. There are eco-lodges and resorts in Mysore and on the Kerala border.
